ST. JOHN’S – St. John’s-based start-up Engage Creative Technologies has been awarded a contract with the Government of Canada’s Department of National Defence valued at $1,266,121.25 to demonstrate its next generation augmented reality system.
Funded by Innovative Solutions Canada (as part of their Testing Stream) and in partnership with the Naval Training Development Center (Pacific) in Victoria, BC, the contract will enable the Royal Canadian Navy to conduct several training exercises by configuring augmented reality technology for various navigational settings. In particular, this collaboration will explore Engage’s augmented reality capabilities to enhance radar-based small target surveillance and oil spill detection.
This technology is a made-in-Canada solution that leverages emerging technology to enhance marine navigation by contextualizing radar data over an individual’s field of vision, in real time, regardless of visibility. By using an augmented reality (AR) headset and combining it with navigational data, vessel crew will have the capability to overlay mission critical information over their field of vision even when visibility is near zero, increasing their situational awareness and improving safety.
This project will be completed at the Naval Training Development Center’s futuristic and state-of-the-art “iNexTT” training facility. It will include training on the system, deployment, as well as the incorporation of key feedback with the goal of establishing the effectiveness of AR in an operational setting. “It’s exciting to see the Canadian government adopt and leverage homegrown solutions based on emerging technologies, especially those that lead to better decision making and safer operations within the Royal Canadian Navy,” says Engage President Aaron Dawe. “We are in the early stages of AR adoption, and to have the opportunity to be part of re-shaping the future and to support the Digital Navy Action Plan is something we are very excited about.”
